Why can 5G be faster on a phone than on a home router?

Separate plan limits, device capabilities, placement and Wi-Fi when comparing phone and home-router 5G speeds.

A faster 5G result on your phone does not automatically mean the home router is faulty. You may be comparing different packages, equipment capabilities, positions and connection paths. A phone on mobile data connects directly to the mobile network; a phone testing a router over Wi-Fi adds another wireless link.

Compare package conditions

Check the exact plan names and speed restrictions. Two SIMs from the same operator are not necessarily equivalent. Home services may also restrict the approved router or location. Do not move a home SIM to another device without confirming that the service permits it.

Isolate the local Wi-Fi path

Where practical, test the router using a suitable Ethernet-connected computer. Check cable and port capabilities. If the wired result is substantially better than Wi-Fi, investigate indoor wireless distribution before blaming 5G reception or changing providers.

Review device specifications

Phones and routers differ in modems, antennas, supported bands and other capabilities. A 5G label does not establish identical performance. Consult the exact model's official specifications and operator compatibility. Neither category is always faster in every network environment.

Keep conditions comparable

Use similar positions, times and test methods. Note background activity on the home connection. A phone tested alone and a router shared by several active users are not equivalent conditions. Repeat at another relevant time and retain a small range of results with context rather than only the highest screenshot.

Check placement and ventilation

A phone beside a window and a router hidden in a cupboard may experience very different conditions. Try an open, safe router location within its operating specifications. Do not place indoor equipment outdoors or in direct heat. If external reception improves at the edge of the home, solve indoor distribution separately.

Avoid unsupported configuration changes

Online instructions for band locking, hidden settings or external antennas may not apply to your model or plan. Start with documented settings, official updates and provider-supported diagnostics. Change one factor at a time so you can identify what helped and restore the previous state if necessary.

Give support useful evidence

Prepare the plan name, router model, connection method, approximate test position, times and result range. Explain whether all devices are affected and whether wired performance differs. Passwords and private files are not needed for this initial diagnosis. The guide can help interpret your observations, while the operator and device manufacturer remain the references for service conditions and compatibility.
